Financial Obligations of Companies Operating in a Technopark
The income exemption rests on separating activities inside and outside the zone, and on consistent documentation.
The income exemption available to companies operating in Technology Development Zones is one of the most important measures supporting software and R&D work. How that exemption actually operates, however, is usually more detailed than people assume.
Separating the Income
The exemption rests on separation. Income arising from activities carried out within the zone, under a project approved by the zone management, must be separated from income arising from activities outside the zone. That separation must be visible in the accounting records, in project-based cost tracking and in the financial statements.
The Personnel Salary Exemption
A similar separation applies on the personnel side. The salary exemption for R&D and support staff working in the zone depends on the employee’s actual working time there. Time spent outside the zone must be monitored and documented, and that tracking is expected to be embedded in the payroll process.
Project Tracking and Deadlines
On the project management side, the project application submitted to the zone management, the approval letter, project end dates and extensions must be followed regularly. Income from an activity falling outside the approved project scope cannot benefit from the exemption.
Documentation
Documentation is the most critical part of the exemption. In an inspection, the question is usually this: with which records do you demonstrate that this income arose within the approved project and inside the zone? That question can only be answered with a record-keeping regime established from the outset.
For companies operating in a technopark we handle project tracking, the separation regime and the documentation process end to end.
Frequently asked about this topic
The questions we are asked most under Technopark Advisory Services.
What is required to enter a technopark?
You need a project with technological content and an application file describing it. The file covers the project’s purpose, method, team structure and business plan, and is submitted for the zone management’s assessment. We accompany you in preparing and presenting the file.
Is the exemption applied automatically?
No. The exemption applies to earnings arising from activities within the approved project and carried out inside the zone. That distinction must be visible in the accounting records and in project-based cost tracking; without this separation, the basis for the exemption cannot be demonstrated.
What about staff working outside the zone?
The salary exemption depends on the staff member’s actual working time within the zone. Time spent outside the zone must be monitored and documented; making this tracking part of the payroll process is the soundest approach.
What should I do if the project period ends?
Project end dates and extensions must be followed with the zone management. Earnings from an activity falling outside the approved project scope cannot benefit from the exemption, so we review periods and scope regularly.
